Weather forecast for January is less severe!

Jonathan Powell

A calmer month but still wintry.

Expect a predominately cold theme during January, but nothing in comparison to that of December 2010, writes senior weather forecaster, Jonathan Powell of Positive Weather Solutions. Cold air has pulled back and retreated eastwards over much of continental Europe, with only a fraction of the countries once enveloped by the cold, now remaining in its grip. A mixture of rain, sleet and snow will affect the UK and Republic of Ireland, with northern; eastern and central parts of the UK most likely to see snowfall.

The snowfall, whilst confined in moderate accumulations to the aforementioned areas, will crop up intermittently across most areas during January 2011, and there remains the potential for it to cause disruption, but again, nothing in comparison to last month.

Other parts of the British Isles, bar the outlined areas, and the Republic of Ireland, will tend then in general to experience more in the way of rain and some sleet / wet snow, with only the highest ground likely to have any telling accumulations of snow. Expect over all a drier than average month, with temperatures on the average.

How much more can the authorities handle? Very little is probably the answer.
