Boilers and softeners can cause big problems

Icy cold weather can create many problems around the house and with the recent spate of very low temperatures it was discovered that both condensing boilers and recycling water softeners can cause very distressing problems. There may be other household appliances too that present problems?

To operate effectively, condensing boilers and recycling water softeners both need to discharge used water to the outside, via efficient drains. So their pipe outlets need to be checked regularly, especially during very cold weather or they will ice up!

In a report in the Guardian newspaper, during the coldest weeks in the latest cold spell, one London plumber said that freezing conditions had caused particular problems. And no doubt this was repeated around the British Isles?

The Guardian’s plumber says: “We seen a lot of this sort of thing this winter and lots of people don’t seem to know much about it. With older boilers you might expect a problem in the cold weather, but when people have spent a lot of money on a new boiler it’s a nasty surprise.”

The Guardian says, overall the falling temperatures were troublesome for all sorts of boilers. In the busiest week for it engineers, British Gas is said to have repaired 100,000 boilers.

However, the easiest solution by half to sorting out condensing boilers and recycling water softeners is to lag the outside pipes with the polystyrene insulation that can be bought for a couple of pounds in a DIY supermarket ort hardware store.

In particularly cold weather, it’s very important for all householders and tenants to keep a very close eye on the performance of all their energy appliances.
