Perfect integration of tiles and solar panels

A housing project by Gentoo Homes of 110 homes in Chilton Moor near Sunderland is almost complete using Marley Eternit’s Edgemere interlocking slates and concrete plain tiles. It contains a mix of two to four bedrooms bungalows and three-storey town houses, around a green space area.

Paul Nagel, a Gentoo architectural technologist, says: “The appearance of the properties varies as we specified two different types of brick and had some of the properties rendered. By alternating two colors of the Marley Eternit Edgemere slate and plain tiles, this gives the houses character and ensures they don’t appear too uniform.

“We specified the tiles as we required a durability that would also work in conjunction with integrated solar panels and surface-mounted PV panels. We also wanted a brand with a reputation for quality products. We chose the Old English Dark Red and Smooth Grey colourways in the Edgemere slate and concrete plain tiles as the site is within an established residential area and these finishes complement the existing roofing within the Chilton Moor area.

“The feedback we’ve had on the roof so far has been excellent. The project has been under construction for a while now and the tiles we used on the first phase of the development still look great several years after installation.”

This is a fine example of new homes on a brownfield site.
