Slate tiles replicated in solar PV panels

Solarcentury has a ‘universal’ C21e solar electric slate, enabling many of the four million UK homes with slate roofs to go solar.

Demand for solar photovoltaics (PV) in the UK has increased with the drive to zero carbon homes, and over the past year with the introduction of the “Feed-in tariff”. The average household can now create an annual income of £800-900 plus £200 electricity savings with a solar electric roof. Globally, solar photovoltaics is now the fastest growing electricity generating technology in the world, with rising oil and gas prices it is expected to match the price of fossil fuel electricity production in some countries within the next year.

Derry Newman, CEO Solarcentury said: “To achieve our goals, our design team now use innovation & manufacturing techniques used in the automotive and high tech consumer electronics industries. Our products are carefully designed to perform and to last. The C21e tile is used by house builders just like any other roofing product and is very simple and fast to install. We believe we have now developed more solar products to replace building materials than anyone else.”

Despite innovation and growth in the industry, however, the UK has the lowest solar ambitions of all major EU economies, less than 1% of our electricity to be generated by solar by 2020. The Government is now consulting on the level of demand that should be incentivised for the clean technology and the size of solar installations suitable for the UK.

There are currently around 10,000 jobs in the UK solar PV sector. This was set to rise to 15,000 by the spring and 17,000 by the end of the year. The current uncertainty risks inhibiting recruitment in this highly skilled and innovative industry, and threatens existing employment.

The soar industry, through campaign group ‘We Support Solar’ is asking the Government to restore confidence in solar and have much greater ambition in the fastest growing electricity generating technology in the world.
