Never a better time to promote energy efficient windows

There has therefore never been a better time for the glass and window industry to state its environmental credentials and meet its customers expectations, according to Nigel Rees, chief executive, Glass & Glazing Federation.  With rising energy costs, he said there was a need to embark on a campaign to promote energy efficient windows (EEWs) at both political and consumer level.

UK homes are unnecessarily emitting 3.5 million tonnes of CO2 and wasting £370million per year through poorly insulated windows. They  are responsible for 28% of all UK CO2 emissions. Non energy efficient windows are responsible for 20% of all heat loss.

The GGF set up FENSA as a Competent Person Scheme for the then ODPM to allow self certification of compliance to Building Regulations.  FENSA has been extremely successful and has allowed some very powerful statistics to be collated.

The scheme was launched on 1 April 2002 and at its peak in 2004 it was registering almost 1.1 million installations.  This figure dropped to just over 814,000 in 2009 and dropped further in 2010 to just under 800,000.

GGF undertook a major project in 2008/09 entitled Project Green to establish the Industry’s environmental credentials and quantify the benefits of energy efficient windows.  To calculate the benefits, the GGF set up an Energy Savings Calculator, which it has since had endorsed by the Energy Savings Trust and now made freely available to our Members and consumers alike.

The Calculator is a powerful software programme where GGF members and consumers input details about a particular domestic property and its existing windows, dwelling type, fuel used and unit cost and the type of energy efficient windows to be fitted.  The Calculator then assesses the energy and the money that the customer will save!

This individual cost saving for a particular property is far more interesting than average figures which may or may not have any relevance to occupiers own situation.  The Energy Savings Calculator is regularly updated to reflect any changes in fuel costs so that is always accurate.
