Fibre cement slates provide natural look for contemporary housing developmentA new private housing development in Grimsby, Lincolnshire has been completed using Marley Eternit’s Birkdale fibre cement slates.

With the need to satisfy a council planning requirement that requested use of a slate roofing product to achieve a natural slate-look finish, the Birkdale fibre cement slate has met this important consideration. It also offers outstanding performance and green credentials by achieving an A+ rating in the BRE ‘Green Guide to Specification’.

The properties in the development have a combined size of 280m2. Whilst acknowledging the wishes of the planning process that required a slate effect finish for all roofs, the team at specifiers KD Design in Grimsby – who oversaw the development – opted for the all-round benefits that fibre cement slates can deliver.

Simon Dennis from KD says: “We have specified Marley Eternit fibre cement slate products in the past. As well as being lightweight and durable, we also feel that they keep their original colour far better than original slate products.

“By using Birkdale slates on this development we felt we could achieve the natural slate look the council wanted to see, but also ensured maximum performance of the roofing solution. To date, in the time we have used fibre cement slate products we have not had a tile damaged or needed to replace any slates.”

Charlotte Hughes, campaign manager at Marley Eternit, said: “Birkdale fibre cement slates – which were specified in blue black on the development – offer the charm of a natural slate roof together with the economic, functional and sustainability attributes of modern slate technology.

“With a low percentage of mined natural slate actually used as a finished roofing material, the environmental benefit of using alternative solutions such as Marley Eternit’s UK-manufactured fibre cement slate is clear. Our fibre cement slate range can achieve an A+ in the BRE ‘Green Guide to Specification’, giving a clear sustainability advantage to specifiers.”
