Special showing of Al Gore film

What is thought to be the first of its kind in the UK, the Thames-side town of Marlow has, under the guidance of Carbon Coach, Dave Hampton, launched a Low Carbon Community Club. It’s based on a local school and comprises mainly enthusiastic, conscientious “green” parents who are keen to reduce their carbon footprints to make their positive contribution to help control global warming.

If you live in the Marlow area you may be interested in going along to what’s probably the club’s inaugural meeting next month on Tuesday 1 May at the Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School. It starts at 7.15pm and aims to finish at 10pm.

The club will kick off with a special showing of the film  ‘An inconvenient truth’ which has created a lot of attention and is presented by Al Gore and directed by Davis Guggenheim.

The film will be followed by a pretty high-powered question and answer discussion including climate change experts Alan Knight, co-chair of The Sustainable Development Commission (an independent advisor to the Government reporting to the Prime Minister). Jim Walker, founder of The Climate Group (a leading non-profit organisation dedicated to advancing business and government leadership on climate change) and the Carbon Coach himself, Dave Hampton, who is helping individuals and businesses nationwide minimise their “carbon footprint.”

This will all be held together by BBC Newsnight’s Liz Mackean, in the chair.

Tickets are £5 adults with £3 concessions.

If you are not already familiar with the background to the film, in it Al Gore, former US vice president with a lifelong commitment to reversing the effects of global climate change, presents a wide array of facts and information in a thoughtful and compelling way.

“He strips his presentation of politics, laying out the facts for the audience to draw their own conclusions in a charming, funny and engaging style and, by the end, has everyone on the edge of their seats, gripped by his haunting message,” says director Guggenheim.

Gore says: “The film is not a story of despair but rather a rallying cry to protect the one earth we all share.  It is now clear that we face a deepening global climate crisis that requires us to act boldly, quickly, and wisely.”

This Marlow Carbon Community Club is a very interesting and important development in the fight against global warming. Hopefully, other areas of the UK will take up this initiative and we shall see similar, self-motivated groups springing into action. If you are planning anything along these lines,  www.4ecotips.com would be very pleased to hear from you through its FORUM and will help raise your profile.
