GreenPan cookware scheme
To celebrate the launch of GreenPanTM range in
the UK and Ireland this October, distributor Typhoon has partnered with Carbon
Clear and pledged to grow a tree for every item sold from the cookware range.
Made up mostly of recycled handles, bodies and lids the GreenPanTM ranges have
been designed with the environment in mind.
It’s all coated with ThermolonTM, an alternative
to standard PTFE non-stick coatings. This releases 50% fewer greenhouse gases
during production, significantly reducing the carbon footprint. The packaging is
also recycled.
For each item sold from the range the company
will make an investment in Carbon Clear’s dedicated tree-plating projects in
India. All projects must benefit the community implementing them as well as the
environment so Carbon Clear works with local groups to carry out its sustainable
tree-planting projects. As well as removing harmful CO2 from the atmosphere, the
trees provide a steady income for farmers, useful crops such as fruit or
medicine, shade for secondary crops and reduce soil erosion.
The farmers are incentivised to plant and
maintain the trees by regular payments based on the number of surviving trees
they have on their land. In addition to financial support the farmers are also
given guidance on agro-forestry to promote best practice and improve survival
rates of the trees.
Nine trees grown and maintained over a ten year
period will sequester 1 tonne of carbon dioxide (equal to driving over 3,300
miles in an average family car or keeping a traditional 60w light bulb on over
29,000 hours).
