UK workplaces need to green up
More than eight in ten (86%) UK employees would like to see more
environmental policies introduced at work, with a third (32%) saying they are
disappointed by their employers’ lack of efforts to go green, according to a
poll of over 1500 employees released today by MSN Environment.
The introduction of paper recycling bins (23%) and automatic computer shut
downs (23%) were voted the top two green initiatives that should be introduced
as standard, with a further one in five (22%) saying they would like their
bosses to implement sensor lighting to avoid wasting electricity in empty
rooms.
Who’s to blame?
As far as responsibility goes, 41% of Brits don’t feel it
is up to them to push through green initiatives at work, saying it’s their
employers’ responsibility. One in five (22%) levy the blame away from their
superiors, feeling the onus is on the Government’s shoulders and up to them to
insist green measures are introduced.
Not in the name of “going green”
While the results of the study show
British workers are committed to going green, many are still unwilling to give
up certain office perks in the name of the environment.† Over half (51%)
wouldn’t sacrifice regular boils of the kettle for their traditional cuppa and
other office treats we’d hate to lose include air conditioning (28%), printing
out emails (11%) and taking taxis to meetings (9%).
MSN Environment Channel content manager, Nicole Thomas, says: “Our online
study clearly shows that many British workers are thinking green and want their
employers to go the extra mile as far as environmental policies are concerned.
However, we all need to realise that it’s our own efforts that count as well -
if everyone makes a few small changes, it can make a big difference in the long
run.
