Quiet wind turbine does the business

Things were spinning at Glastonbury this year following the installation of a 5kW Skyrota wind turbine next to the festival’s main Pyramid stage. It was installed Sitec Infrastructure Services.

The unique two-bladed vertical axis wind turbine was one of the first of this new design to be installed in the UK and received favourable comments from numerous festival goers and performers alike as it spun elegantly whilst lit up at night to the tunes of rock legends, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young and Tom Jones.

The turbine is designed to be used in urban, rural and built-up areas and, unlike conventional wind turbines, can collect wind from all directions. The turbine features a unique gearbox system, which was developed by Richard Chadwick and was featured on BBC’s Dragons Den. The result is an extremely efficient and quiet turbine, which delivers meaningful clean energy.

Chris Evans, director of Sitec, says: “Glastonbury is seen as the largest Greenfield music and performing arts festival in the world so it’s an amazing achievement that the Skyrota turbine was showcased at such a high profile event.

“The turbine was seen, not only by the thousands at the festival, but the millions of people watching on television at home. The exposure has certainly helped generate a lot of interest in what is considered by many as a hugely important environmental product for the future of clean energy production.”

Now they’ve go the wind sorted out at Glastonbury, perhaps they should turn their attention to the rain? Must be a great opportunity for some rainwater harvesting!
