Melinda seeks six Watt Watcher families

Small lifestyle changes can make a big difference

In a bid to help the nation become ‘energy-smart’, E.ON – a leading UK power and gas company – has joined forces with TV presenter Melinda Messenger to launch ‘E.ON Watt Watchers’.

The company is looking for six Brits to take part in its nationwide ‘watt-loss’ competition. Watt Watchers will challenge the chosen recruits to take a leaner, greener attitude towards reducing their electricity and gas consumption by taking part in the ’90 Day Watt Watcher Challenge’.

The launch follows research, commissioned by E.ON, which reveals that a massive 83% of Brits are unaware of the savings a few simple lifestyle changes could make to their energy bills1.

Over half of those questioned (53%) admit to tightening their purse strings due to the recession. But although more than two thirds (68%) confess that reducing the size of their energy bills is their greatest motivation for becoming more energy efficient, only half (51%) are actually doing something about it in a bid to save money.

As well as heading-up the search for six wannabe Watt Watchers, Melinda will also be taking part in the 90 Day Watt Watcher Challenge.†She says: “Like many people, I have great intentions to run a ‘lean, green’ home. But as a busy mum, it’s really hard to juggle a career, a home, a family – and find time to be energy efficient.

“So I can’t wait to learn about the simple steps my family can take to become more ‘energy-smart’. Cutting down on how much energy we use will not only help us do our bit for the environment, but we’ll be saving money too.”

To take part, each member of the ‘Watt Watchers’ group will need to genuinely want to reduce their home energy consumption. The chosen six will be given the tools and knowledge required to embark on the 90-day challenge, including a tailored energy audit from E.ON’s Green Queen, Emma Thompson.

The overall winner will be the Watt Watcher who trims the most off their energy consumption and carbon emissions. They will be crowned ‘E.ON Watt Watcher of the Year 2009’ and receive a cash prize of £1,000.

The competition is a response to research which revealed that 83% of Brits are unaware of the savings a few simple lifestyle changes could make to their energy bills and, whilst over half the nation (53%) admit to tightening their purse strings due to the recession, only half (51%) are actually doing something about it in a bid to save money. Last year’s winning Watt Watcher reduced her family’s energy consumption by a massive 57%, so we’d love to recreate the success this year!
