Target is end of 2010
The Centre for Sustainable Energy is joining the tens of thousands of individuals, businesses and organisations that have signed up to the 10:10 campaign.
This initiative comes from the team behind the film ‘The Age of Stupid’ and aims to encourage everyone to make their own 10% cut in energy. Signers-up include universities, local authorities, premier league football clubs, engineering firms, plus public figures such as Delia Smith, Kevin McCloud and David Cameron.
Tim Weisselberg, CSE’s communications and publicity manager, explains what it means for CSE. “It’s a great campaign and many of our partners are also on board. For us, a cut of 10% is quite a challenge.
“Our offices are new and quite energy efficient so we hardly ever need to heat the building. We don’t have company cars or take business flights and, as you would expect, our staff have got into the habit of switching off lights, computers and other equipment when not in use. In other words, there’s not a lot of slack to cut.
“However, there’s still more we can do and 10:10 is our opportunity to benchmark our energy use properly, test different approaches, and routinely check our progress. Our initial focus will be on IT and lighting and we’ll keep you updated over the course of the year.”
Anyone can get involved in 10:10. Over 50,000 of the signers-up are individuals who have made the pledge to reduce their energy by 10% in 2010. They can do this in a variety of ways, such as reducing energy use, cutting car and plane travel, buying less and recycling more. Visit the website below to find out how you can join in.
