 Wind powered cuppa for park keeper

True meaning of “green tea”

Traditionally the curse of park keepers, windy weather is now bringing warmth and comfort to a Leicester park keeper who has been kitted out with a wind powered tool shed.

E.ON, one of the UK’s leading electricity and gas companies, has used its energy expertise to convert the shed of award winning park keeper Mick Eaton to renewable energy.  A bespoke wind turbine generates enough power to provide lighting and boil an energy-efficient kettle.  The result – genuinely green tea.

Mick Eaton, head park attendant at Knighton Park, explains:  “I’m thrilled with E.ON’s help in bringing the power of nature into my tool shed.  I love working outdoors but, if I’m honest, I enjoy a good moan about the British weather as much as the next person.

“Now, with the wind helping me to keep warm while I’m on my break, I can reduce the bills, do my bit for the environment and have a nice brew at the same time!”

Jim Macdonald, director of the consumer business at E.ON, says:  “We want to change the way people think about energy – where we source it, how it’s delivered to customers and how it’s used.  By teaming up with Knighton Park, we’re showing that green energy is real and very accessible.”

Its green energy products include:

  Go Green - matches every unit of electricity used by residential customers with one produced by a renewable source and supplies it back to the national grid. E.ON has also teamed up with Climate Care to offset the carbon emitted when customers use gas in their homes;

  EasyGreen - a new green energy product for businesses that provides renewable and offset electricity solely from wind farms and hydro power stations, with a Climate Change Levy Exemption certificate.

E.ON has taken a leading role in the development of wind power in the UK since 1991, when it invested in its first wind farm.  The company now operates 21 wind farms – both onshore and offshore – and is currently developing Robin Rigg in the Solway Firth, which will be one of the largest offshore wind farms in the world.
