New Energy Education Resources
for Family Learning
Energy in the Home, the Centre for
Sustainable Energy’s new energy
education resources for Family Learning,
are now available to download for
free from a special new section of
the CSE website.
The resources provide materials for
Family Learning tutors to teach sustainable
energy issues to adults with children
from nursery age to Key Stage 3. Although
developed specifically for Family
Learning, they will also be useful
for anyone involved with education
and interested in teaching energy
issues.
Three units are available:
• Unit 1: Energy Use and the
Environment
• Unit 2: Save Money and Reduce
Pollution
• Unit 3: Renewable Energy.
The activities are designed to enable
adults and children to develop together
their knowledge of energy use in their
own home and its link to environmental
issues. They are encouraged to make
decisions about individual and collective
actions that will improve the quality
of life now without damaging the planet
for the future. Each unit covers ten
sessions and includes tutor notes
providing background energy information,
suggested session outlines and activity
sheets.
Energy in the Home has been piloted
with great success in Bristol and
North Somerset. As Briony Goodwin,
one of the tutors of the pilot course,
explains, “The parents get a
great deal from the course and, without
exception, are all now really enthusiastic
not only about saving energy in their
own homes, but also about passing
on the message to their families and
friends. Attendance has been superb
and for the kids and parents alike
it’s been an enjoyable, social
way to learn about the environment.”
The resources support the delivery
of the Open College Network module,
Energy in the Home, and adults can
work towards an accredited qualification
at level 1 or 2.
