Preparations are well underway for the Climate Change Challenge conference taking place on 1 July at the University of the West of England in Bristol.

This event is the climax of an exciting project in which sixth-formers from four local schools have been looking at energy use and the efforts of their local authorities to combat climate change. Around 100 students have been involved.

The students have made site visits to renewable energy installations to explore the issues surrounding the UK’s commitment to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 60% by 2050. You can read their reports by going to www.cse.org.uk/climatechangechallenge. The young people have also surveyed their schools’ energy use and quizzed visiting local authority energy managers on what they are doing to combat climate change.

The Climate Change Challenge will be the chance for the students to present the results of their studies to councillors, local authority officials, and regional decision-makers.

“It promises to be a lively and very challenging day”, says Cheryl Gilbert, CSE Education Project Manager. “The students involved in the project are very vocal in their opinions concerning energy. They are keen to ask searching questions of the adults at the conference which challenge lifestyles and local authority management of resources.”

There are still a few places available for the conference. If you are interested in joining us, email Gaynor Lewis on gaynor.lewis@cse.org.uk
