If you need a new garden gate the Shropshire firm of Applied Technologies has introduced the Ecogate garden gate. When installed most people don't know they are plastic! It's a "fit and forget" product made from robust recycled plastics that can incorporate a variety of security locking devices and hardware.

Being plastic with a subtle timber grain that can be finished to look like the real thing but without the obvious maintenance problems, at the right height the gate provides a virtually unassailable hurdle for even the most athletic burglar!

AUTOMATIC GATES KEEP INTRUDERS AT BAY

There’s no reason why home automation needs to stop at the front door. Automated gates, such as those produced by Gate Express, are one of the most practical applications of automated systems for the home. Security is the most obvious benefit - closed gates deter intruders and automatic gates and automated access control systems allow the homeowner to see or talk to callers prior to letting them onto the property.

The benefits of the convenience and style of an automated gate system are enhanced by the advantages of providing a safe environment, protecting children and pets from straying from the property. Gate access controls can be integrated with many other home automation systems.

For convenience, or to make sure that there are no prowlers, the gate's remote control can also turn on security lights as well as activating automatic garage doors. Video systems can be integrated with other security systems and provide a record of who has called at the gate, even if they didn’t enter the property.

Additionally, the intercom can divert to another phone, or to a mobile, so callers do not know if the homeowner is not there.

SAFEST WAYS TO BEAT INTRUDERS

last updated 24 Sept 04
By Tony Lock

In a recent survey, 28% of respondents said they had experienced a burglary at some time or other. But, according to the British Security Industry Association, there is need to panic. Instead, be aware of the risks of burglary, what increases the risk and what can be done to minimise it.

For instance, houses are most vulnerable at the rear. Burglars can be quite athletic and good at climbing fences. If a 2m high fence is topped with 30-45cms of even weak trellising, the burglar will have great difficulty climbing over without risking being seen. The risk of injury is very likely to put them off.

HOMES UNPREPARED FOR FIRE HAZARDS

by 4ecotips.com

Whilst 81% of households now have fire alarms, a leading specialist insurer is warning that only a fraction of homes have an adequate fire strategy in place. Hiscox, an insurer for homes with £50,000 contents or more, says that the majority of the homes it surveys for security and safety measures do not have copies of valuable financial documents stored away from the home, nor do they keep valuables in fire-proof safety deposit boxes.

In addition, the majority of homes do not have a clear strategy for what to do should their home catch fire. Hiscox advises all homeowners to think carefully about their route of escape should their fire or smoke alarms go off.
