Interest
and scepticism are key factors
A new study has revealed that many
people are interested in hybrid cars
but are still concerned about the
cost of such a vehicle. The Polk Centre
for Automotive Studies in America
found that many had heard of the vehicles
but additional costs associated with
the technology were currently the
biggest turn-off for consumers.
“We are seeing some pretty
interesting dynamics regarding the
whole hybrid vehicle agenda,”
said the director of industry analysis
for Polk, Lonnie Miller. “Input
from our recent work shows that more
than 97% of those we spoke to have
heard of a 'hybrid' vehicle. This
indicates the industry is doing a
great job of getting the word out
about this offering in cars and trucks.”
But while 78% say they would consider
buying a hybrid, sixty-one % of those
who have never owned one before see
cost as a deterrent. In fact, nearly
30% feel the benefits they would receive
from this type of vehicle would not
justify the extra investment.
With the premium for a hybrid in
the US ranging from $4,000 to $9,000
more than a normal car, the industry
says selling the added benefits is
the crucial factor.
The vice president of Polk's OEM
division, Jeff Martini, added it was
“still a ‘wait and see’
game” but felt additional launches
of new vehicles will help to “prove
the value of owning a hybrid vehicle.”
