Pilot scheme is a first

In a bid to encourage uptake of renewable energy across Belfast, the city has received a new wind-powered lighting system.

The environmentally friendly technology is the first self-powered street lighting system in Northern Ireland and currently illuminates New Forge Business Park and the Marlec Green Column.

It uses wind turbines and solar panels to generate power, which is then stored and used at night.

Wilma Stewart of Northern Ireland Energy (NIE) says: "There is no waste as the light is automatically switched on and off by in-built sensors and energy generated is maximised by the use of a low energy, compact fluorescent tube."

It is hoped that homeowners and businesses will show an interest in the technology, leading to more environmentally friendly energy use in the area.
