harsh winter was never going to happen
Weather is a pretty decisive element
in all of our lives and if you know
exactly what it's going to do and
when, it can make life a lot easier.
Sixth Sense, part of the British Weather
Service, has a mission - to use it's
vast meteorological experience and
expertise to "minimize risk and
maximize potential".
The latest literature on the service
says: "Whether you are a trader,
manufacturer, supplier, retailer or
consultant, Sixth Sense will provide
you with an invaluable and timely
insight.
"That insight might be to know
that there's an opportune moment to
trade the weather conditions on the
Chicago Mercantile Exchange or it
could be a timely shout that next
week is an ideal week to kick start
an advertising campaign. Or it might
be that a predicted colder than average
winter means it's an opportune moment
to make an energy trade?"
Whatever and whenever, Sixth Sense
claims it will "give you the
advantage."
For instance, Jim Dale, one of the
Sixth Sense team, explains: "If
you were wanting to place a bet on,
say, the outcome of a cricket test
match in Pakistan we could tell you
whether or not rain might stop play!
In fact we could tell you if it was
going to rain on a specific day in
any part of the world."
So Sixth Sense can provide an invaluable
window on the weather around the globe.
As the Sixth Sense literature says:
"Whether your requirement is
bang up to the minute or for up to
ten days ahead, it pays to have your
finger on the meteorological pulse.
Sudden changes in weather often result
in dramatic financial repercussions
right across the board."
So far as the predicted "severe
winter" is concerned that the
UK was told to expect, Jim Dale comments:
" We just don't see it. We expected
December and January to be very similar
to the same months throughout the
previous decade. Not overly severe
but with occasional wintry spells,
which is very much how it's worked
out so far.
"The end of January and early
February we think there might bring
changes but it's not going to be a
1962/63 scenario, more bog-standard
weather. Then we are into March and
that's winter virtually over!
"The global warming cycle has
actually moved the weather in a direction
where winter kicks in a bit later
and we come out of it a bit earlier.
From what is going on in the atmosphere
just now, our view of the rest of
the winter is such that we do believe
there will be a cold thrust from the
east in a couple of weeks. But we
don't see a protracted period of cold
weather. But we won't be taking stock
and saying that was the coldest winter
for many decades!"
In addition to Jim Dale, the Sixth
Sense team includes John Kettley and
Adrian Crocker, whose combined meteorological
experience spans some 75 years plus
there is a dedicated precipitation
of backroom staff.
